Undergraduate Studies

Purpose

The purpose of the Department of Economics is to give students the theoretical knowledge and appropriate tools for the analysis and understanding of economic problems at the level of the individual firm, household and of the national economy with its international links. It is possible to combine specialization in secondary fields, as specified below. Successful completion of the B.A. curriculum prepares the student for work in the private and public sectors, and for an advanced degree in economics or in business administration. Our B.A. studies offer both single major and double major program. The single major program offers sub-specializations in economics, business administration and accounting.

Admission

Students must meet the general conditions for university admission at the level required by the Department. Students are to meet the following mathematics requirements:

  1. At the five-unit mathematics level, a grade of 65 or above.
  2. At the four-unit mathematics level, a grade of 70 or above.

Students who do not meet the above requirements may choose one of the following options:

  1. Pass the national classification examination with a mathematics grade of 90 or above.
  2. Take a preparatory summer course given by the University of Haifa and obtain a grade of 70 or above.

Course Structure

  1. The Double Major Option
Here the student can combine studies in economics with studies of equal scope in an additional department. The economics program entails compulsory and elective courses in economics, as well as basic quantitative studies.
  2. The Combined Economics-Law Option
This special program combines economics and law studies. Students who complete their studies in both departments receive a single diploma carrying with it degrees in both fields.
  3. The Single Major Option
Students registered for this option may choose, to specialize in expanded economics, business administration or accounting. The curriculum is built on four basic divisions: courses in theoretical and applied economics, basic quantitative studies, courses in the field of specialization and complementary background studies in social sciences. The options for specialization are described briefly below.
    • Expanded economics
This option is recommended for those interested in studying for a higher degree in economics. The purpose of these studies is to broaden and deepen both theoretical and practical training in economics. Emphasis is on advanced courses in that field, and complementary subjects.
    • Business administration
The option is designed for students wishing to broaden their professional training in business economics and management. In addition to courses taken by all students in the single major program, students take courses in basic auditing, cost accounting, marketing and finance.
    • Accounting
This option combines accounting studies with economics. The courses offered correspond to the requirements in the professional examinations of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Students may complete an additional year in accounting and in legal subjects and obtain an exemption from the stage of the final examinations of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants, by agreement with the Institute.

Time Framework

Studies are organized on a semester basis, except for the fourth year in accounting, which runs as a full academic year. In particular, every subject, except for seminars, constitutes a self-contained unit leading to academic credit provided that the requirements of the Department are met.
